Types of Magnesium: Benefits, Differences & Which Is Best
Magnesium Glycinate, Citrate, Oxide or Threonate? What Each Type Actually Does

Magnesium glycinate. Citrate. Oxide. L-threonate. Malate. Taurate.
They all contain magnesium, but they do not behave exactly the same way.
Different forms of magnesium can vary in absorption, gastrointestinal effects, elemental magnesium content, cost, and the reasons they are commonly used.
That does not mean every magnesium form has its own proven medical benefit.
The short answer
There is no single “best” type of magnesium.
The most useful form depends on:
- why you are taking it
- whether you want—or want to avoid—a laxative effect
- how much elemental magnesium the product actually provides
- medications and kidney function
- age
- whether good clinical evidence supports the outcome you want

What does magnesium do in the body?
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions.
It contributes to:
- normal nerve and muscle function
- energy production
- protein synthesis
- glucose regulation
- blood pressure regulation
- bone structure
- normal heart rhythm
- DNA and RNA synthesis
But there is an important distinction:
Being involved in a biological process does not mean taking extra magnesium automatically improves that process.
Benefit depends on dietary intake, magnesium status, medical history, dose, formulation, and the outcome being treated.
Why do different types of magnesium behave differently?
Magnesium in a supplement is attached to another compound.
That affects properties such as solubility, absorption and what happens to magnesium that remains inside the intestine.
Absorption
The NIH identifies magnesium citrate, chloride, lactate and aspartate among forms that tend to have greater bioavailability than magnesium oxide and sulfate.
That does not mean every magnesium compound can be neatly ranked from best to worst.
Gastrointestinal effects
Magnesium remaining in the intestinal tract can attract water.
That explains two things at once:
- why supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, and
- why some magnesium products are deliberately used for constipation.
Elemental magnesium
The number that matters on the Supplement Facts panel is elemental magnesium.
A product may contain a large amount of a magnesium compound while providing much less actual magnesium.
Magnesium glycinate
Magnesium glycinate—often labeled magnesium bisglycinate—is commonly chosen when someone wants supplemental magnesium without intentionally producing a strong laxative effect.
It is frequently marketed for sleep and relaxation.
A 2025 randomized placebo-controlled trial in 155 adults with self-reported poor sleep found a modest improvement in insomnia severity with magnesium bisglycinate compared with placebo.
The effect was small, which is very different from saying glycinate is a sleeping medication.

Magnesium citrate
Magnesium citrate is one of the magnesium forms the NIH identifies as relatively bioavailable.
It can also produce an osmotic laxative effect, making constipation one of the clearest reasons someone might select citrate instead of another form.

Magnesium oxide
Magnesium oxide has comparatively lower fractional absorption.
That does not make it useless.
More magnesium remaining in the gastrointestinal tract can contribute to its laxative effect, which is useful when that is the intended purpose.

Magnesium L-threonate
Magnesium L-threonate has attracted attention because of preclinical research involving brain magnesium, synaptic function and memory.
Human trials are beginning to explore cognition and sleep, but the evidence remains emerging rather than definitive.
It has not been proven superior to other forms for routine magnesium supplementation.

Which magnesium is best for sleep?
This is one area where supplement marketing has moved faster than the science.
No magnesium form has been established as an effective treatment for chronic insomnia.
Newer studies of bisglycinate and L-threonate are interesting, but they do not establish a universal winner.

What about magnesium for kids and teenagers?
Children should not simply be given a scaled-down version of adult supplement advice.
Age, diet, medications, kidney function, symptoms and the amount of elemental magnesium all matter.
Recommended daily intake and the upper limit for supplemental magnesium are also two different numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best type of magnesium?
There is no universal best form. The appropriate form depends on the goal. Citrate may make sense when constipation is also present, glycinate is often selected when a laxative effect is unwanted, oxide has practical GI uses, and L-threonate has emerging cognition research.
Which magnesium is best for sleep?
No form is proven to treat chronic insomnia. Magnesium bisglycinate has newer randomized evidence showing a small improvement in insomnia severity in adults with poor sleep.
Is magnesium glycinate better than citrate?
Not universally. The clearest practical distinction is often gastrointestinal: citrate is more likely to loosen stool.
Is magnesium oxide a bad form?
No. It is less efficiently absorbed than several other forms, but that does not make it useless. Its GI effects can be useful when constipation is the intended target.
Can kids take magnesium?
Sometimes. Pediatric supplementation should account for age, dietary intake, elemental magnesium dose, medications, kidney function and the reason for supplementation.
